Greenacres is a small community in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. Greenacres is located on State Road 446 about 20 miles northeast of Sanford and 30 miles southwest of Ft. Myers. The name "Greenacres" suggests that it once had lush green fields; indeed, many undeveloped portions of Seminole County are still covered in wild rice and other natural vegetation. The first settlers in what would become Greenacres were the Brahmins from India who arrived around 1810 in search of land to settle. By 1815 they had founded a small village on a parcel of land they acquired from the Creek Nation east of modern day Sanford. They named their village after Lord Dalhousie (the British military governor who took over Indian Affairs in 1813). In 1833, Captain John Fenton bought all the land east of Sanford and began development as an area called Fort Fenton which grew into what is today known as Greenacres Village. Fort Fenton was destroyed by Seminoles during the Second Seminole War but its remnants remain today as part of the town's infrastructure including several churches and a Masonic Lodge #527 lodge hall which has been used as a gymnasium since 1915. In 1840, Major James Caldwell purchased some additional acres adjacent to present-day Greenacre Village from Captain Fenton for $1 per acre . He built his home there – now known as Caldwell House – starting in 1840 until his death in 1865 aged 83 years old . After Major Caldwell's death, his wife donated most or all of her husband's estate (including approximately 8 acres) to establish the unnamed school he had started in 1840 which was eventually renamed "Seminole Female Seminary" because it served female students only until 1944 when it became "University Hall" for both men and women with separate classrooms/hallways/etcetera until 1960 when it became Redevelopment Authority Hall & Museum at SEMINOLES COLLEGE where it still functions today!
