The first European to visit Greenacres was Captain John Smith on his 16th voyage of discovery in 1704. He named it "New Providence" after Newfoundland, Canada. Greenacres was platted in 1827 by Jno. Hickey as part of what would become Lee County and named for General Lafayette's estate near Paris, France - which he had visited while campaigning there during the French Revolution. It became a cattle station and trading post called Eustis on nearby Escambia Bayou in 1849 when Colonel James Wilkinson built a sawmill here with help from local investors including Benjamin Fenton and Augustus Earle Brownell. In 1860, Greenacres became an agricultural center when Major Lockhart developed land here for cotton farming that would continue until the late 20th century. The town had its peak population around 1930 but declined thereafter as more people moved away to escape the Great Depression. However, since 2000 it has regained some momentum thanks to new development along Escambia Bayou and elsewhere throughout the community
Greenacres was founded in 1892 by J. C. Penney and his wife, Emma. The original store was located on what is now State Road 7A in the town of Greenacres. In 1924, Penney's son, John Fenton Penney Jr., opened a second store in Mount Dora. In 1948, the company becamePenneys Incorporated when president John Fenton Penney gifted his entire fortune to the company. By 1972, the company had two stores and employed over 200 people. On July 1st, 1984, Penney's widow donated all of her assets to the company for charitable purposes; Greenacres continued operations until 2000 as an independently owned business with headquarters located in Mount Dora.
