Greenacres is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville-Boca Raton metropolitan area. The village of Greenacres was founded on November 12, 1881 by citizens of Jacksonville and Boca Raton. The name came from the wild roses that grew in abundance near the original site of town. On May 5, 1886, Greenacres incorporation as a village was granted by Florida Governor James K. White to Robert E. Lee and his wife Julia Childs Garrison. In 1907, after years of petitioning by business owners in Jacksonville and Boca Raton who desired to establish a commercial center within their limits but were not given priority due to arbitration rulings favoring Jacksonville over Boca Raton, another group of businessmen led by Wm Henson started what would become known as "The Girders", which purchased an old sugar plantation east of Greenacres for $1 million dollars ($ when adjusted for inflation). In 1912 they donated land adjacent to their successful new business location to build a new community called "Lakeland". Despite initial plans for only two-thirds of the acreage dedicated to this community (the rest being used for housing), development proceeded rapidly because it became clear that Lakeland would soon be needed as more people moved into the expanding city surrounding them and businesses located inJacksonville began looking for locations closer to shopping malls and other services available inJacksonville rather than away from it. By 1976 all homes had been built or sold with one exception – an office building now occupied by JCPenney which opened in 1964 on what had once been farmland owned by local farmers; today's largest store in town (and also home to several restaurants). During its heyday during World War II – which saw significant growth due both because many Floridians enlisted and because Palm Beach County joined forces with Florida State Troopers serving overseas – Greenacres boasted a population high enough (>10 thousand) that it formed its own government (a municipal corporation) under the name "City of Greenacres".
