Greenacres, Florida is a small town in Bay County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name comes from "Greens" and "acres". The village of Greenacres was platted in 1876 by J.C. Beasley and Wm. Pritchett as part of Bay County's new townsite program. The first settler arrived in 1881 and named it Tannery Point after General James Akenhead's tannery on the bayou Teche near present-day Jacksonville. In 1909, Mrs. Fannie Baird donated land for a public school which became known as Greenacres Community School District #2 (now). In 1932, citizens voted to annex Pinecrest Beach which then became Greenacres' primary economic engine with its own shopping center and several factories during World War II when Tampa Shipbuilding produced ships for the US military. After the war ended, many businesses closed and Pinecrest annexed back into Greenacres; however, some residents maintained their independent business district until 1984 when all businesses were within one government structure again under continuing private ownership by community members who had managed it since before incorporation: Westbay Shopping Center (later Turney's), First National Bank (now Citizens Bank), Allstate Insurance Company (now GEICO), Honda Civic dealership (now Jiffy Lube) and Home Depot store - now Sears Holdings Corporation Headquarters Store . In recent years there has been an increasing trend towards developing green space including a large golf course that opened in 2006 adjacent to First National Bank across from the high school; two parks located just off Uptown Road; another park planned for development on Courthouse Boulevard east of town limits; a retirement home built behind Lowe's Hardware Stores on State Road 823 south of town limits; plus several smaller projects completed or under construction such as a library/golf course combo on mile marker 313N exit 20A off I-95 northbound Exit 4B near present day Plantation Club Estates subdivision
