Greenacres is bordered by Jacksonville to the north and east, Ormond Beach to the south and west, and Stuart to the northwest. The name "Greenacres" likely comes from two different sources: one source suggests that it may be derived from "greens", meaning trees or bushes in America; while another suggests it derives from "acanaires", which means French people who lived on Indian River Bayou before European settlement began. The first recorded mention of Greenacres occurred in 1827 when Captain John Demarest noted that there were plants growing near Fort Moultrie on Anna Maria Island. In 1841, Colonel James Hernando De Soto's explorations as part of his Florida Expedition found evidence of Native American habitation in what is now Duval County. On July 10th of that year he discovered an island with a small forest on it called Red Bank within sound of Fernandina Beach - this was later renamed Anna Maria Island due to its association with De Soto's expedition. On January 14th, 1847 local entrepreneur David Blythe donated 640 acres (250 hectares) of land between Stonington Road and Jacksonville Boulevard known as Blythe Forest Reserve; it would become known as Greenacres after he donated it to the community for development purposes. Greenacres is a Tarrant County, Texas community located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The population was 2,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Richardson–Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as a farmstead on what is now US Highway 75 north of Commerce Road in 1930. A post office operated there from 1935 to 1951; its first name was Greenacres Post Office. As word spread about the beauty of Greenacres and its potential for development, many people decided to move to the community during the early 1960s when it became apparent that there was no significant industry or economic opportunity near by. In 1966, entrepreneur Don Buchholz purchased 1/4 acre (0.18 km2) of land adjacent to Greenacres and planned to build a small shopping center with drive-through lanes, an auto service station, and other commercial amenities which would be accessible only by car from within the community. However, due to lack of interest from developers and competition from larger towns in nearby Richardson-Houston, Buchholz abandoned his plans for the shopping center after only a few months' operation. In 1984, developer John Ladd acquired 1/4 acre (0.18 km2) of land adjacent to Greenacres and developed it into what is now known as Ladd Place - one of Dallas' most prestigious high-end neighborhoods (). After years of planning and construction - including over $100 million in public funding - Ladd's development finally opened its doorsto residents on September 10th, 2006.:Ladd Place currently includes more than twenty thousand square feet (1,600 m2) of retail space,.
