Greenacres is a small town in Leon County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. The town's name may come from the Tallahassee greenacres that once stood near the community. Greenacres was first established as a post office in 1895. The first store opened in 1897 and the first settler was George Ayer who arrived with his family in 1892. The Ayer family left Greenacres during World War I to avoid combat and returned after the war. They founded another farming community called Wacoalanche which burned down in 1925. In 1926, Captain James Jarrell donated land east of town to create a new village named Greenacres which would serve as a model for other townships within Leon County that were planned for development including Belleview (1927), Walkertown (1928), and Dunedin (1929). In 1929, Captain Jarrell donated more land to form what is now known as subparagraphs tract No 7 on U.S. Highway 27 south of town center and extended it northward to become what is now known as East Business District section 107A which included much of present day Greenacres before it became an independent municipality on November 3, 1959; annexation by neighboring unincorporated communities followed on December 5th that year with most of eastern sections becoming part of West Palm Beach effective January 2nd 1960; re-establishment of municipal government resulted in enactment by then Governor Lawton Chiles on January 11th 1960 creating An Category M Township comprising portions lying within South Miami-Dade County north of Biscayne Boulevard between Sunrise Road and Park Avenue/Upper Spanish River Boulevard beyond Broward Boulevard under Municipal Code Section 2-5(a) Designation by then President Dwight D Eisenhower on February 10th 1960 authorized by Executive Order number 95-2

The town's importance declined during World War II because of strategic bombing raids by USAAF planes over Jacksonville and Tallahassee; however, it has since regained some of its former prominence as a commercial center with several large businesses including Carnival Corporation, Everglades Homebuilders (now Delta National), JCPenney (now Sears), FirstSouth Bank (now Citigroup), Ford Motor Company's Plant #2 (later renamed Fordham University Plant #2), PGA Tour golf course,[1] and Baptist Health Medical Center.[2]
Greenacres was founded in 1884 by J.W. Pickens and his wife, Fannie Blythe. The town was named after the Acacia trees that were abundant in the area at the time. Greenacres grew quickly and soon had a post office, school, cotton gin, livery stable and more. The population of Greenacres grew to around 200 people by 1910. In 1916, Hurricane Hazel caused extensive damage to the town and killed many residents. However, Greenacres slowly rebuilt and by 1920 had a population of 350 people. By 1930, Greenacres had become an important center for citrus production in Florida. A large new factory was built in Greenacres in 1936 and led to increased economic development for the town. The town experienced another significant growth period during World War II when many local businesses became involved in manufacturing munitions for the war effort. After the war ended, growth slowed as several factors such as FedERAL defaults began to impact the economy of Florida made it difficult for small towns like Greenacres to keep up with larger cities
