Gainesville, Florida is home to one of the largest telescope collections in the United States. The Gainesville Astronomical Society (GAS) was founded in 1892 and has been hosting a variety of astronomical events ever since. In 1896, GAS settled on what is now called Park Avenue and began purchasing land for its new observatory. Between 1915-1916, GAS acquired three additional acres, making it possible to build a permanent facility. The first buildings were erected on this property in 1916-1917 and were composed of two stories with an observation platform at the top. In addition to their telescopes, GAS also built a number of research instruments including a spectrograph and an ammeter. The original Observatory building was destroyed by fire in 1951 but was replaced by the current structure in 1957. The majority of the equipment used at GAS has been stored here since then; however, some dedicated components such as the spectrograph have recently been moved back into use for research purposes. Currently, there are six telescopes located within the Observatory complex: three single-purpose T2 mountings that provide excellent views from all around Gainesville (the largest telescope being 8 feet tall), as well as an S1 reflector telescope that offers stunning views across downtown Gainesville and downtown Tampa Bay. Additionally, there is a small amount of observing time available each day using either one or two T1 mounts which allow people to see particular stars or planets without needing any special equipment or location knowledge!

This designation allowed for increased development within the city limits and helped spur economic growth throughout much of what is now Jacksonville County
