This period also saw much development within Gainesville's economy as African Americans formed businesses such as A&P grocery stores and streetcar lines enjoyed success for years before integration into white society soon followed throughout most southern cities during that time frame. After World War II ended in 1945, many black soldiers returning from combat brought theiriences with them which led to increased economic development for blacks throughout southeast Florida including Gainesville; this included establishment of black business organizations such as Alpha Kappa Alpha fraternity while maintaining close cultural ties both with whites and African Americans throughout most aspects of their lives Today there are more than 20 percent African American residents living within City limits making it one of Southeast Florida's largest diverse neighborhoods In 1957, UF bought land west of campus between Dunlap Street and North Avenue for $2 million dollars establishing what would becomeUF Campus Limits which continues to be an important anchor tenant today In 1965 UF annexed nearby Saint Petersburg High School giving rise to Saint Petersburg Campus
