Today, the Gainesville Rifle and Pistol Club has over 220 members who shoot pistols and rifles for fun or competition purposes throughout Florida

From here they began stocking up on goods needed for their colony in Florida including saltwater fish and timber which would soon become important exports from Tampa Bay. In 1828, when Sumterville was established as a town in Alachua County (northwest of Gainesville), Gainesville became an agricultural community with landowning whites making up more than half the population by 1830; African Americans constituted less than 1% of the total population then or even today. By 1840, most white farmers had left for better opportunities in Tennessee or Kentucky because of hard times following Jackson’s victory in 1812 over Native American forces at New Orleans during his War for Independence (1812). African American slaves continued working on plantations until 1865 when all slavery was abolished within Ulysses S. Grant’s United States through General Order No 8 Geo., Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – thus ending any remaining black slave ownership in America west of Mason/Dixon Line.) The first school in what is now Gainesville was built on Center Street southwest of present day University Avenue between 1840 and 1845; it was called Drury School after one of its original principals. In 1853, three teachers taught chemistry classes out their home while another teacher did instruction at Baldwin Academy which later became Stroud Hall Academy; both schools were destroyed by fire around this time according to historical documentation Despite being unlicensed educators secondarily teaching English as a second language many students learned chemistry starting with local coal tar products found at local mills until such time as state licensed instructors arrived during Reconstruction era 1870s – accompanying military personnel returning from Civil War battles across America during reconstruction period also brought new scientific knowledge & technology back home whence started chemical engineering education process at University Ave./Gainesville Polytechnic Institute 1895-1905 aimed at Preparing Students For Professions In Industry
