In 1827, Captain James Wilkinson surveyed what would become Gainesville on land that he purchased from the Osceola Chief. Wilkinson named his new settlement "Wilkinson's River" after himself. In 1828, Wilkinson commissioned surveyor John Taylor to extend an exploratory route westward from Jacksonville through what is now Gainesville and Tallahassee. On November 1, 1829, Taylor reported back that he had found "a strong stream of water running east and south parallel with this quadrangle." This official description became known as “Taylor's Waterway” because it led from Jacksonville to Gainesville. The first white person to set foot in what would become Gainesville was Captain David Worth who built a cabin on Wheeler Island in 1836 while exploring Tampa Bay area for a railroad company. Worth collectedigator fresh water from some long submerged trees along his property line which he used for drinking and cooking; today's Wheeler Island still bears evidence of this early pioneer days when one could find several fresh water sources near by! Another early settler were two brothers Edward Moore and John Moore who owned land northeast of present day University Drive between Old Fairbanks Road and Indian Trail. The Moores farmed here until 1840 when they sold their holdings to Colonel Alexander MacKinnon who founded MacKinnon's plantation onwhat is now Park Avenue in 1830AD; this plantation later became gainesville Plantation which still stands today! From about 1840-1860 most settlers in established areas such as Fairbanks Road & Indian Trail began moving towards what is now University Drive where they opened up large estates including: Payne Brothers - located on current day US Highway 27 just north of Stadium Drive - started producing cotton ginned cotton during these years; also Isaac Hixon - located east side of Stadium Dr., just south of current day Coliseum Dr., produced sugarcane during this time period From about 1860-1870 especially there began an influx of Irish Catholics fleeing Fermanagh Province Ireland due mainly to political unrest there; many settled adjacent areas around College Park & East Lake including: Donahoe Bros./Donahoestown Cement Works [now Donahoe Elementary School] - starting out small doing manual labor but soon procuringrickshaw rides around town for their passengers going into Seminole County for shopping or church services etc.; John Doherty/Donohue Mansion [later renamed Donohue Hall] - commenced production of limestone blocks used extensively throughout state Capitol Building construction beginning c 1870s until repeal by legislature in 1907 AD ensuing public outcry resulting in returnumption olblocks once used again by state government under new management & ownership; final arrival Of Irish Earls Grey [Duffy], Phelan & Keane at nearby hotel called Spanish Springs late 1800s prior to establishment ol campus today Also shortly thereafter another group arrived locally known as “The Gadsden Purchase” consisting mostly OF Germans Immigrants coming mainly from Hamburg, Germany although some also came from DusseldorfGermany (Moses Bernbach) – arriveaded by Major General William Troup along with wagon train circa1865 enrouteFROM ALACHUA COUNTY TO GAINESVILLE
