Gainesville is the largest city in Florida and the most populous city in the Tampa Bay area. The population of Gainesville was 153,362 as of 2010. It is one of two cities in Florida with a professional hockey team (the other being Orlando), and it has been home to the University of Florida since 1892. The first Europeans to visit what is now Gainesville were Native American traders from southcentral Florida who visited in 1684. In 1765, Englishman John Musgrave founded Musgore Plantation on what is now Musgrave Island. At that time, Gainesville was part of Spanish Fort County. On March 30, 1821, United States soldiers burned down Spanish Fort and burned all its buildings except for a chapel which they took back to Mobile for use as an artillery emplacement.In 1824, Congress passed an act authorizing U.S. President James Kenedy to make surveys for a military post at what would become Gainesville. When Kenedy arrived at his new location on October 25,1825 he named it Jacksonville after Jacksonville, Alabama which he had just moved into from Stonington County (). The town would not be established until February 3, 1830 when Judge Augustus Hennepin purchased land east of present-day downtown Gainesville from David Livingstone Forney for $10 per acre (). On November 15th., 1830 Reverends James Caldwell and Jonathan Edwards erected a log church on College Hill opposite modern day State Road 519/520 East Business Street (). This was the first building constructed in what would become Gainesville proper and also served as the parish house until 1872 when Parish House #2 was built next door (now SR 520). In 1835–36 Major Cushman opened up Flora Dormitory on White Sands Road northeast of present-day Haley Hall before construction stopped because no money could be raised to continue; this structure became known as “Dormitories 1 & 2” or simply “Dormitory” due to their proximity during those years.– A large share of US military personnel stationed here during World War II lived ensuite barracks called Camp Dunlap located along SR 519A off Alafair Drive near today's Haley Hall campus.– Another early dormitory complex also operated by USMC troops during World War II was Naval Air Station Southwest Field (), acrossSR 519N from today's Marine Corps Base Northeast Annex.– In 1957 Gatorade began manufacturing products here when four plants opened: Headquarters Building (); Southern Technical Institute (); Proctor Health Sciences Campus (); and Advanced Manufacturing Center (). Gatorade remains headquartered there today with over 100 employees.– After decades primarily serving students at UCF but also some residents including many black professionals who worked at local hospitals there began becoming more suburban with timeshare units available starting in the late 1970’s…………..Today there are several business districts within Downtown Gainesville including North Avenue District (), Main Street District (), Westshore District ()……….Gainesville has experienced significant growth both economically and culturally throughout its history…………………………………..
In 1892, Gainesville was founded as a town in Polk County, Florida. It was named for General James K. Polk, who served as the 36th president of the United States and was born in nearby Ocala. The first post office opened in Gainesville on July 1, 1892. In 1912, Gainesville became part of the newly created St. Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area.
