Gainesville is a city in Florida, United States. The population was 20,993 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Alachua County and home to Gainesville State University. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Gainesville was made by Father Gabriel García Márquez on November 29, 1765 when he and three companions founded a mission called San Felipe de Tejas on the present day corner of Washington Avenue and Blythe Street. In 1821, Colonel James K. Polk established U.S. Military Academy here as part of his effort to build an American empire after becoming president of the United States in 1848. The academy closed in 1892 but reopened as Florida State University in 1903 under Governor John Treen’s leadership with instruction for both men and women from then until it became a state university in 1972. In 1980, Gainesville became an incorporated city with its own mayor-council form of government which has been retained since then; however, City Council meetings are still held at the Alachua County Courthouse downtown where they are open to the public. In 1840, Captain John Linnell founded Fort Valley phosphate plantation near what is now Gainesville while serving with Confederate forces during the American Civil War through his ownership of Linnell’s Plantation near present day Dunlap Lake; this plantation later became part of Sunnyside Farms Corporation before being sold to Monsanto Co., Incorporated in 1978 for $145 million following their acquisition of Monsanto Foods Incorporated (Monsanto). At that time Sunnyside Farms Corporation included about 97% crop land within modern-day Gainesville limits while also possessing significant mineral resources (elements including phosphate) located primarily around Dunlap Lake and other nearby mountainsides which would have provided valuable access to markets throughout southeastern North America had they not been acquired by Monsanto – one such market potential occurred when Sunnyside Farms Corporation leased lands adjacent to Miami International Airport for use as a research airport starting in 1985 experiencing heavy traffic due to those airports growth during that decade leading up until its purchase by Monsanto company). Today much or all of these assets still remains within modern-day Gainesville limits although there has been some recentropriety taking place particularly involving agricultural land holdings having become increasingly problematic given increasing competition from developments along Interstate 75/State Road 92 corridor – particular recently with respect to possible annexation or development thereof resulting from such competition).
