In 1838–39, local residents built a log courthouse/ jail which still stands today as part of University Avenue's commercial district. A schoolhouse/ chapel also soon became home to students enrolled in Seminole Indian School (later named Alachua State College). Territorial Governor James Kenedy leased land southwest of present-day Gainesville from Seminole leader Osceola with instructions that it be used "as an agricultural landsource." When word spread through Seminole tribes about white settlers' interest in their land, they began raiding southwesternFlorida settlements carrying off crops, livestock, tools and firearms valued at $5 or more per head—a loss for both colonists and Native American gangssters whose raids had become increasingly common since Santa Anna's Mexican War closure grant period ended in 1821 without any new Mexican land concessions being made available for settlement east of Lake Pontchartrain under US Army jurisdiction.–[1] On December 6, 1841 Joseph Walton organized a company with others to purchase 8 acres (3 ha) northeast of present-day Gainesville where he erected a cabin called Walton's Fortification House ().
