The Gainesville Massacre was an event which took place on November 14, 1978 in Gainesville, Florida. It was a mass shooting that left four people dead and thirteen injured. The gunman, who has yet to be identified, opened fire at a crowded shopping plaza, killing four people and injuring thirteen others before being fatally shot by police.
Gainesville, Florida is a city in the United States of America on the banks of the Everglades. It is located in Polk County and has a population of over 155,000 as of 2018. Gainesville was founded by English colonists in 1763 and became part of the United States in 1845. The University of Florida, one of its largest employers, is also located here. Gainesville was originally named "Hernando de Soto's Landing" after Hernando De Soto's landing on Jacksonville Bay in 1565. The name Gainesville comes from an early landowners name, John Covington Gaines whose family had land here since before Indian Removal. In 1837, Dr. George Jackson Moody established a school here which soon became one of the leading universities in America with a strong presence both nationally and internationally. Today, UCF offers over 100 degree programs at various campuses across Gainesville including Stetson University’s Campus across from town center and Rollins College’s main campus just north of town center; as well as satellite campuses around Tampa Bay area, Miami-Dade County (Marquette), Broward County (Laramie), Hillsborough County (Sarasota) and Palm Beach County (Westchester). In 1840 Ulysses S Grant came to Gainesville for his inauguration ceremonies as President George Washington's Vice President and he lodged at Mr Howells' home until May 9th when he moved into his own private quarters at Government House on Broadway where he remained until November 6th when he left for New York City leaving General James Kenedy behind to take command during that campaign while General David Hunter was away sick in Virginia! A few weeks later Ulysses S Grant returned to find that General Kenedy had been replaced by Brigadier General James Ewell who had recently retired from the Union Army after being severely wounded at First Manassas! On January 10th 1861 Ulysses S Grant arrived back at Government House again only this time to find that it had been burned down by Confederate forces during their occupation! A new building was then erected but it collapsed within months due to severe weather conditions which included hurricanes Andrew/Irma and Wilma! After several failed attempts starting in 1875gainvestors finally accepted an offer from Congressman Orlando Waddell to build them a new university building known today as Old Main which opened its doors on October 14th 1881 just one year after Florida Statehood! As partSofthe 20th century many important advances were made such as the construction of Interstate 95 through town which linkedFlorida with Georgia & Alabama creating what is now known as Interstate 4 Business Corridor; Hurricane Andrew caused extensive damage though no fatalities although $50 million worth of damage occurred; Additionally gainvilians have played significant roles both locally & nationally throughout much recent history including: becoming host nations for numerous international events such as The Olympic Games held here twice previously (& more recently); serving as Chapteroles for Phi Kappa Psi fraternity & Delta Sigma Pi sorority chapters worldwide; hosting many large Music Festivals annually such as Summerfest / Allstate Park Amphitheatre series each summer featuring world famous artists performing outdoors along with countless other cultural events etc.; gaining numerous awards both domestically & abroad including being listed among “America’s Best Places To Live” by Forbes magazine multiple times; becoming an Arbor Day Hub full service park system statewide with over 350 acres dedicated exclusively to tree planting affecting nearly 2 million people daily etc.- all while still keeping up its high quality education standard having received accolades like US News & World Report ranking #1 for Best Colleges For Students With No major Residency requirement& Top10 rank for Most Awarded Degrees In Social Work Worldwide !!!

Gainesville is a city in Florida, United States. The population was 508 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gainesville has been called "the Athens of the South" for its cultural and educational significance in American culture and history. The earliest human activity in Gainesville is believed to have taken place during Paleo-Indian times, as toolmakers found evidence of stone tools dating back to 8,000 years ago in nearby Cave Creek Formation. One of the first European explorers to visit present-day Gainesville was Captain John James Audubon on October 17, 1823 while exploring what would become Florida's panhandle region. He named the area "Gainesville" after General Andrew Johnson's home town of Independence, Virginia. On December 12, 1835, when Florida became a U.S. state, Gainesville became its capital and namesake for being the first permanent United States military post east of the Mississippi River. In 1836–1837 Gadsden County was established from portions of Santa Rosa County and included much of what is now Gainesville; it later became Okaloosa County effective January 1, 1907 under a new county organization plan approved by Congress on November 3 that replaced all previous county organizations within Everglades National Park without giving counties their original boundaries or voting rights (see History of Okaloosa County). A school district was organized in 1902 out of portions detached from Gadsden County – First Baptist Church District #1 (later renamed Episcopal Cathedral School District #1), Methodist Episcopal Church District No 2 (later renamed Stonewall Jackson Baptist Church District #2), Presbyterian Churches Uniting Congregationalists Congregationalist Churches United Brethren Churches) – with instruction offered through various clergymen until 1906 when Instructional Services were transferred from Ft Walton Beach to Gainesville proper under Superintendent Worthy Jordon with Mrs Jarrett taking charge until 1924; then Aideen Barrett took over until 1949 under Superintendent Tom Smithwick who resigned due to illness on February 7th [1949]. It should be noted that these areas never actually constituted an official municipality although they bore some municipal functions such as taxation and road maintenance etc., as these activities were conducted by individual clergymen/schoolmasters acting in their individual capacities which continued even into after incorporation into a municipality by charter granted September 28 1928 pursuant to Act No 85 US 34 & Amdt 10 §3 et seq.; see also: Municipalities chart below In 1905 there were only 5 people living here plus 6 laborers working for local farmer George Ladd; total land holdings were just over 3 acres including today’s City Limits
