Gainesville was established in 1837 as a town on the east side of Lake Okeechobee. In 1847 it became an incorporated municipality and in 1959 it merged with neighboring Miramar to become Gainesville-Miramar. Gainesville has been grazed by Native American tribes for thousands of years and early Europeans discovered its salt marshes in 1665 when Father Jacques Marquette sailed into the area on his flagship "Endeavor". The first European settlement in what is now Gainesville was founded by EnglishmanRichard Harbison on December 12, 1837, as a town named after George Washington's birthplace (then called Mount Vernon). On October 5, 1860, Gainesville became an incorporated municipality from land acquired from Miramar Township. On January 14, 1861, Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee attacked Fort Union near Gainesville while Federal troops were deployed to suppress a slave uprising there; all but one of the town's citizens were killed or taken prisoner. Afterward many black Americans moved to Jacksonville for work during Reconstruction; however some white residents also moved into Gainesville because they found hope for progress within freedmen's rights movements that had emerged there since 1865. On December 6th 1942 - just weeks before Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor - President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9482 creating naval air station NAS Pensacola-Ft Walton Beach which would serve as an American base for Japanese forces invading America; Naval Air Station NAS Pensacola-Ft Walton Beach would become one of America's largest military installations ever built with more than 3200 civilian employees working at its peak in 1945. It was also here that radar equipment first arrived in America for use in WWII as part of Operation Crossroads . After World War II ended there were significant growth rates in terms of housing and employment until the late 1970s when a series of hurricanes caused significant damage to many buildings including much loss Of life among locals .
