Gainesville, Florida is a city in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 37,869 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Brevard County. Gainesville is one of the most populous cities in Florida and has been growing rapidly for over a century. The first Europeans to visit what is now Gainesville were traders and missionaries from Spain who came in 1763 during Governor Manuel de Cámpora's expedition against Seminole Indians. They named the site "San Marcos" after San Marcos de Tolosa, located about 25 miles (40 km) to the southwest, where they had been trading with Native Americans. A mission was established here by Father Cristobal Tijerina on November 14, 1788 under Spanish sponsorship as La Iglesia Mayor de la Providencia De La Bahía de Santa Fe y La Florida (the Parish Priest of St Augustine Bay and Fort Caroline). In 1802 Mexico gained independence from Spain and made Gainesville its capital; it remained so until 1835 when Tampa became the new capital. The town developed around two large plantations: José María Pacheco's Donaciano & San Pablo Farms on land that now forms part of University Park; and Pedro Menéndez Coello's Banqueta plantation on much older land that stands today near present-day College Road/Utopia Parkway just east of I-4 Exit 269A (Old Utopia Rd), off Old US 1 (I-4). These three plantations produced almost all of Gainesville's agricultural output for more than a century until white people drove them out or exchanged them for other valuable acreage around Lake Worth in what is now Broward County. In 1838 Gadsden Purchase opened up new acreage north of downtown Gainesville to white settlers; this area would become known as White Settlement #1 because only white men were allowed to purchase land here without consent from the original Indian landowners. Most early settlers were mechanics or farmers who brought their animal husbandry skills with them when they moved into this undeveloped country full of natural resources such as timber, coal, waterholes and swampy areas rich in seafood which they could trade with local tribes for food supplies needed back home. For many years there was no school or hospital within miles of White Settlement #1; however due to improved transportation conditions after World War II development began quickly along University Avenue east of White Settlement #1 becoming known as "Gainesville Heights". This section experienced rapid growth during post-World War II decades through suburban sprawl which benefited both locals and newcomers alike as residential property values soared while commercial properties grew into megachurches and other major businesses that extended beyond downtown Gainesville limits onto University Ave.: Xavier University / Rollins School Of Business / American Heritage @Bayfront Center / John F Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum complex between First Street SE/University Avenue SE/US 1 south to Third Street SE - one block west of Interstate 4 exit 271B (Old US 1) - making us one world class city! Today much remains unchanged from those days including its vibrant arts scene which features some OF THE BEST performing arts venues anywhere including Symphony Hall/Mann Center (formerly Jacksonville Coliseum), Orange Bowl Stadium (formerly Citrus Bowl), Walt Disney Concert Hall / Hollywood Palladium etc., outstanding shopping at nearby malls like Mockingbird Mall etc., beautiful wide open spaces ringed by tall buildings like Dillard's Department Store etc., diverse culture just minutes away via various roadside restaurants etc., vast numberless golf courses dotting our landscape every mileplus plus several colleges & universities close by including Southern Illinois Univ Carbondale / Miami Dade Collège et Université catholique du Louvre USA Campus - both highly ranked - making us one world class city!

Gainesville is a city in Florida, United States. It was founded on November 30, 1837 by Major General Andrew Jackson and named for George Washington Gaines. The city's population was estimated at over 150,000 in 2000. The first settlers of Gainesville were white men from Georgia and Alabama who brought their homes with them when they fled the Seminole Wars. They built small villages near what is now downtown Gainesville, which they called "the town." On October 12, 1837, the first U.S. post office was established in Gainesville by General Andrew Jackson with the name of "Athens" because of its location on the Chilton River. The town changed its name to Gainesville on February 7, 1840 due to a proposal from Mayor John Lloyd Griffith that it be given an entirely new nameakespiritual connection to Athens (now Georgia Tech). In 1847-48, two years after Jacksonville had been founded as a cotton port on Florida's Gulf Coast by British traders under the auspices of the United States government to support American efforts in Mexico during the Mexican–American War, gainesville became one of several early English-speaking towns along Florida's Coastal Plain. By 1800 this area boasted more than 100 buildings including 10 schools and 20 churches; many were built by Methodists led by Reverend Atherton Baldwin while he served as pastor at First Baptist Church in Jacksonville
