The area now known as Gainesville was founded by English colonists in 1795 as part of what was then Spanish territory. The history of Gainesville goes back to 1795 when English colonists arrived in what is now known as Gainesville to take up land grants from the Spanish government. The first permanent European settlement in what would become Gainesville was made on April 6, 1796 when James Robertson and his family erected a log cabin on a bluff overlooking Stonington Harbor near today's downtown area. In 1821, General Manuel de la Hoya established Fort Moultrie here after invading Cuba and finding that Havana had been abandoned due to American military superiority at that time. By 1825, USS Constitution had arrived in Pensacola Bay and begun bombarding Havana with cannons daily; this destroyed most of the old town center and gave rise to rumors that Gainsville might be chosen as its new capital because Havana was too dangerous for civilians to inhabit safely (although this claim has never been substantiated). In 1827, Gainesville's first courthouse—the only one built within town limits at that time—was completed by local builder John Sibley along with justice courts and other public services needed for fledgling county government under American rule. By 1840, all but two buildings inside town Limits were either destroyed or moved out into open space when FtMoultrie closed down after five years of operations while Seminole Indians still roamed free nearby. A year later – October 1st – fortifications were rebuilt atop Point Lookout hill overlooking Mobile Bay to prevent any future attack by Cuban forces operating from Cuba led by José Antonio Pérez y Velázquez during US economic embargo against Spain (see Battle of Pensacola). After just six months storage at Point Lookout Hill during an upcoming hurricane season before being redeployed southward along Mobile River during low tide conditions – Fort Moultrie recommenced Bombardment missions against Havana starting on November 16th off shore just north of present day Downtown Gainsville Today’s downtown business district began developing around this time with construction Kieran McCann Plaza beginning construction in early 1849 adjacent to Alabama Street/Downtown Ave., which served as Post Office until 1906 The post office relocated from its original location on Alabama Street/Downtown Ave circa 1907 next door to Phelps Dodge store before moving again several times over ensuing decades across several block boundaries including First Baptist Church - currently located southwest corner First Avenue & Dunlap Streets - current location between East Dunlap Street & West Dunlap Streets Warehouse District began developing northwest side adjoining current University Place Historic District developed roughly concurrent with post office relocation next door between East Main Street & South Main Street approximately 1800’s
