In 1851, Gainesville became a municipality with a mayor and five trustees; it remained municipally Controlled until 1959 when it became part of Alachua County as part of an effort to increase agricultural production within county boundaries The growth of local agriculture caused problems for Gainesville promoters who wanted to move the university out into surrounding towns for fear that this would lessen their ability to control attendance at UCF which then grew rapidly due to private donations and government support In 1906 Alachua County voters passed an ordinance creating university status for UCF which allowed for more unrestricted land purchases within county borders In 1959, following passagenut Statehood legislation statewide,Alachua County voted to become one unit with unified governance including university status Today, Gainesville has become one of America’s most diverse cities with over 150 languages spoken natively or secondarily among its residents

Gainesville is located in central Florida, about 10 miles west of the city of Orlando. The Gainesville area was first settled by African Americans in the early 1800s. In 1837, a group of white men and women led by Captain John C. Goode built a small fort on the east side of town to resist Seminole Indian attacks. By 1840, Gainesville had become a successful farming community with several churches and schools. In 1861, Confederate forces attacked Gainesville while Union troops were fighting in nearby Jacksonville.Nearly 400 people died in the attack, most of whom were civilians who had gathered to celebrate Confederate victory over Union forces
