In 1895, Gainesville incorporated as a city and began to compete with nearby Tampa for economic development. In 1907, Gainesville completed its first shopping mall which is now known as the Town Center Mall. In 1936, construction began on what is now University Boulevard which would become one of the most significant thoroughfares in Gainesville
