Gainesville, Florida is home to the Gainesville Armory and, as one of its most famous armsories, it has a rich history with firearms. This History starts even before the gun shop was founded in 1892 by two brothers, Hiram and George Gaines. The first firearm store in Gainesville was not actually located on Main Street but on what is now Roosevelt Drive. It had been started as a general store by Hiram and George’s father-in-law, Amos Eaton. In 1892, when the brothers opened their business on Main Street, they were the only arms dealers in town. They quickly became popular for their quality products and services and soon developed a reputation for being “the best place to buy guns in Gainesville.” Over time, other businesses cropped up around the Gun Shop including ammunition stores and pawn shops. However, the Gun Shop always remained at the forefront of firearm sales in Gainesville because of its unparalleled customer service and knowledgeable staff. In 1922, Hiram gained national fame when he successfully lobbied Congress to pass The National Firearms Act which made it illegal to sell firearms without a license from federally licensed manufacturers/dealers! The Gun Shop continued to be an important part of local gun culture until it closed its doors in 1984 due to financial difficulties. However, since then there have been several attempts by various organizations (includinggainesvillearmoryfoundation)to reopen the Gun Shop as an Armament Sales Storefront or Museum operated under government sponsorship or donation status (most recently through Kickstarter). There have also been several plans proposed to demolish or raze old buildings that stand along Roosevelt Drive near where the original store used to be located; however these efforts have all failed so far due to opposition from locals who feel that this would further erode community fabric and Heritage values associated with Headquarters of The Gainsville Armory – one of Jacksonville’s most Historic places!

Gainesville is located on the Gulf of Mexico, about sixty miles (100 km) south of Jacksonville and seventy-eight miles (125 km) east of Tampa. The area that would become Gainesville was first settled by Native Americans in this region during the 18th century. By 1821, Spanish traders had established a small post here named Santa Elena on Stonington Key which they called San Agustín de la Vega de los Negros (St Augustine's black bear island). In 1824, when Spain ceded Florida to the United States as part of its Treaty of Paris following the Mexican–American War, Gainesville became part of what was then known as Bay County. At this time it consisted only of a few scattered farms and hamlets near present-day downtown Gainesville and Bayport Island. In 1860, James Acker bought 2,000 acres (8 km²) northeast of town for £4 per acre ($6/km²). He founded what would become Alabama A&M University in 1865 and named it after his senatorial colleague from Georgia John Copley Aiken Sr.). The university has since grown to more than 100 campuses across North America with over 50,000 students enrolled annually. In 1925 Acker donated land comprising today's north side of downtown Gainesville to build what would become Alachua State College; now Alachua State University

By 1930 there were over fifty thousand people living in Gainesville proper with more than seventy-five businesses providing services to residents within its five boroughs; these businesses included banks (JPMorgan Chase & Co.), newspapers (The News-Press Company), hospitals (Jackson Memorial Hospital), theaters (MGM Grand Theatre), bus terminals (Southwest Florida Terminal Railroad) and fifteen schools serving students from prekindergarten through high school diploma level; today only four of these schools remain: Jackson Memorial Hospital School District No 1; University of Central Florida; Stonington Presbyterian Academy; and Episcopal School Ofgainesville. One significant event that occurred during this time period was the formal annexation by Gainsville of neighboring Plantation Key Village which had been part of Sanford since 1851 but had not fully incorporation into Gainsville until 1870 due to lack of business or development opportunities within its own community center or leadership changes within Sanford/Gainesville society that favored annexation elsewhere

Gaines, who fought in the Mexican-American War and then became a United States Senator from Florida. In 1902, Gainesville was incorporated as a city.
