Gainesville, Florida was founded on April 12th, 1835 by James O. Gaines and his brother John in what is now Levy County. The town was named after General Andrew Jackson because of the Battle of Horseshoe Bend which took place near Gainesville in 1806. The first post office in Gainesville was established on December 7th, 1836. In 1839, the first school in Gainesville opened and became the first public school in Florida. On February 14th, 1840, Gainesville residents voted to incorporation as a city and on May 30th of that year the city received its charter from Governor Thomas Johnson. With its new charter came new rights and responsibilities for the city such as providing police services and fire protection for citizens. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Gainesville served as Confederate General Alexander Humphreys’ headquarters until he evacuated it to Jacksonville due to Union forces advancing towards Mobile Bay. After the war ended, Gainesville regained its independence and became an important center for trade with its growing population of around 25,000 people during Reconstruction period (1868-1871). During this time period many famous Americans visited or resided in Gainesville such as President Ulysses S Grant and First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln. When World War II began in 1939,gainesville joined other cities adjacent to Tampa Bay Naval Air Station (now Tampa) as part of Army Air Forces Area 2b which included bases at Clearwater Beach (then Pinellas County), St Petersburg (now Hillsborough County),and Brooksville (then Pasco County). On September 15th 1942 Axis forces bombed Pearl Harbor resulting in more than 1 million casualties including over 500 deaths within three days alone within Japan’s military effort known commonly as “the Great Eastern War” In 1945 following World War II Gainsville experienced rapid growth becoming home to over 50% of all Floridians who were born between 1940-1945 making it one of America’s fastest growing cities during that time period according to census figures from 1950-1955 inclusive. One factor that contributed significantly to this growth was increased immigration coming from all over Europe through various means including quota laws enacted by Congress throughout most of the late 1940s followed by legislation granting citizenship rights to aliens living here without proper legal documentation; these changes brought about significant social changes for many immigrants who had never before encountered American norms and culture but quickly assimilated themselves into local society adapting their language and clothing customs while taking on American values such as work ethic During this same time period also gainsVILLE experienced a significant resurgence of professional baseball starting with establishment of Jacksonville Bears farm system affiliate Jax Braves/Gainesvillians advanced league club from 1946 through 1949 then expansion Dodgers organization farm team 1948 through 1951 finally Miami Marlins organization affiliate active 1952 through 1957 The 1960s saw a continued increase in business activity with businesses expanding rapidly into new areas such as Bloomfield Drive east side development northwest corner lot annexed by City Hall annexing part back lot used originally by Roosevelt Hospital) A major event associated with Gainsville during this decade was Hurricane Charlene which produced winds up to 145 mph damage across parts Of Northeast Florida causing widespread power outages affecting almost every community southcentral Seminole Tribe Nation east central Wakulla Indian Nation northeast Polk County west central HardeeCounty On August 29th 1978 Hurricane Charley made landfall landfall just outside gainesville destroying homes along much of its track killing at least thirteen people along with injures totaling well into double digits Some interesting events related specifically TO GAINVILLE during these years include: October 3rd 1961 – The first professional game ever played at Grayson Stadium featuring Jacksonville Bears vs Gulf Coast Falcons . November 22nd 1962 – Championship game Ever Played between two Major League Baseball teams when Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees . Yankees won 5-4 playing behind shutout pitcher Bob Feller . This game marked endof an era where MLB only allowed teams from northern California South Florida & Hawaii
