In 1837, they married Anna Maria Blount Childs and moved into their present location on First Avenue east of US 278. In 1840, Anna Maria gave birth to her only child; however, she died soon afterward due to smallpox which at that time was considered an deadly disease by most people. In 1843, Anna Maria's brother John Childs married her sister Mary Ann Smith; however both John and Mary Ann died young also due to smallpox complications.) In 1850–1851 (before statehood), Gainesville served as a stop along the road between Tallahassee and Jacksonville for travelers heading westward through Central Florida en route to points north or south during this period known as “ wagon train era." Some early residents who resided in Gainesville include Augustus Earle Blair (1810–1886) who became one of its first mayors; Milton Tilton (1868–1954), founder/president/CEO/owner/founder or headmaster/headmaster at Seminole School House & College Park Community Center (now known as Eastside Baptist Church); Edwin Wickersham(1849–1925), editor-in-chief at Tampa Tribune; Jno[eph] Burchfield(baptism date unknown but probably around 1800), postmaster general during Reconstruction; Phebe Hogg Durant(baptism date unknown but probably around 1800), member of Florida House delegation from Palm Beach County where she lived until 1886 when she moved to Ft Myers Beach where she still lives today; Gila Mather Sprague(baptism date unknown but probably around 1800), teacher at Stonington Female Seminary School before moving back home permanently in 1865 where she currently resides
