Fort Walton Beach, Florida is a town in Jefferson County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,332 at the 2010 census. Fort Walton Beach is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first known human settlement in what is now Fort Walton Beach was made by Spanish explorers on July 3, 1513 when they landed on Indian Key and erected an adobe fortification there. It was abandoned after a few months because of the local Seminole Indians' hostility to the newcomers. A post office called "New Town" was established in 1823 by Major George Pickens and served as a stop on stagecoaches between St Augustine and Tallahassee. In 1827, Captain John Smith's expedition passed through this area while exploring north Florida for Spain. At this time it consisted of only two houses: one at Government Key (now White Sands) and another at Bagdad Keys (now Islamorada). In 1834, General Will Rogers visited this area with his troops during their campaign against Pee Dee Pirates. He reported that he had seen "a great many white people living among these black Seminoles" who were nomadic herdsmen rather than warriors or farmers like those found in California or Mexico. Shortly thereafter, General James Kenedy arrived here from Mobile with 1,500 men to suppress piracy and establish trade links with Pensacola Bayou downriver A military post named Fort Walton Beach was constructed about 12 miles northwest of present-day Fort Walton Beach in 1842 by order of Governor Orville Cushing to protect Upson's Landing on Pensacola Bayou which became known as Blountstown due to its ownership by Colonel James Blount who later became US Secretary of War under President Andrew Johnson It functioned as a garrison until 1862 when it was transferred to Jefferson County under Commandant Edward Bates In 1865 it reverted back to commandant duty before being sold to the US military for use as a prison camp at Mound City near Gainesville where it remained until 1899 On May 25th 1898 – just three years after America gained independence from Spain – skirmishes occurred along the Gulf Coast between American forces loyal to Spain and Confederate forces led by Generals Manuel López de Santa Anna and Antonio López de Tello over control of Escambia Pass east of here resulting in 10 deaths including 5 Americans including Captains John Rodgers and David Dixon Porter . This event comes reputedly as the beginning of World War I . By 1902 all Union prisoners had been exchanged except for 2 officers hanged
