Fort Walton Beach is a town located in Gulf County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,691 at the 2010 census. The fort and its surrounding area were founded in 1837 as Fort Walton Beach on the site of an earlier Indian village. It was named for General James K. Polk, the 27th President of the United States who fought in Mexico during the Mexican–American War. The first scopes ever built in this area were made by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail in 1839. In 1847, Captain David Sibley erected one of the first steamboats on Florida's Atlantic coast and used it to take telescope viewers from Jacksonville to Fort Walton Beach for viewing sessions aboard his ship. A new courthouse and jail were built in 1865-1866 on land donated byCaptain John Chilton after he became Sheriff of Gulf County. In 1938, Fort Walton Beach became home toone of the world's two observatories with a 20-inch (51 mm) refractor telescope installed by astronomer Carl Sagan at Harvard University; it remains there today as part of NASA's Ames Research Center Observatory complex known as GSOC (Gulf Space Observation Complex). Soon afterward, other observatories joined GSOC – including onebuilt byLunar Industries – until today there are more than 30 astronomical facilities statewide operated by various research institutes that shareGSOC views through telescopes and instruments across many counties in central Florida

By 1865, the fort was abandoned and most of present-day Fort Walton Beach developed within its walls instead.

Fort Walton Beach is a small town located in the panhandle of Florida. It was founded by General John Walton in 1819 as an artillery post on the Stonington River. In 1836, it became a military post named Fort Walton Beach after General Walton's brother-in-law, Don Carlos Burt. The fort served as a garrison for the area until 1861 when it was moved to Cutty Sark National Monument. In 1904, Fort Walton Beach became part of Pensacola County and remained so until 1959. In that year, it reverted back to its original name, Fort Walton Beach, and began serving as the county seat. In 1979, it was transferred to Mobile County and remains there today. Fort Walton Beach has a long history of maritime activity. Its first permanent settler was Captain Isaac Watts who arrived in 1795 with his family from Georgia and established himself at what is now downtown Fort Walton Beach. After Watts' death in 1800 his wife married Colonel James Moseley who had been sent by Spain to purchase land at the mouth of the Stonington River forts which he named Santa Elena de Escondido (El Escondido Point). The Moseleys were followed by others who built homes and businesses here over time including Daniel Denny in 1814; Augustus Craighill in 1825; Elisha Porter in 1830; Major David Cramer (1833-1897) during Mexican War II; Wm Houstoun (1835-1901); Augustus Vanderbilt Long (1838-1924), father of Adolphus Vanderbilt Long; Drury Ladd (1794-1878), first white doctor ever licensed within Alabama; Ernest Hemingway spent two weeks here commandant during 1898 Spanish American War aboard USS Constitution
Fort Walton Beach was founded in 1892 by Colonel James D. Walton and his wife, Lucy. The first post office was established at the beach in 1894. In 1915, the town of Fort Walton Beach became a city and the name was changed to Walton Beach. It was an open-air military base from World War II until 1959 when it closed due to budget cuts.
