When World War I began in April 1914 there were already three infantry divisions garrisoning FtWaltBeach—the Third Infantry Division commanded by Colonel John S.-Paxson; Headquarters Company District Lieutenant Colonel J[ames] M.] Hickey; and Service Company District Lieutenants Edward W.] Wilkinson and Clarence C.] McFarlane commanding two companies each plus two machineguns detachment under Second Lieutenant Joseph J.] Bourgeois (later Commandant 2nd Marine Regiment) – making a total strength of about 2200 men including cavalrymen assigned). After mobilization ceased all soldiers mustered out except Officers serving honorably beyond 6 months leave or discharge without leave!
