The other version had only one picatinny rail - this was commonly called "Eagle" because it looked like an Eagle Scout Emblem on top! Fort Walton Beach was founded by the first European settlers in 1795. The beach and its surrounding area were vulnerable to attack from Seminole Indians, so the fort was built on a bluff overlooking the water. In 1815, after a series of skirmishes with Seminole Indians, Captain John Stroud ordered an expedition to explore the coast. He discovered that Fort Walton Beach could be defended by two small forts and began construction of what would become Fort Walton Beach. The fort was named for General Andrew Jackson, who had helped win the Battle of New Orleans in 1814. The fort served as a point of entry into Florida for Indian traders and travelers. It also became home to sea captains and merchantmen who used it as a port of call on their voyage out to Tampa Bay or Key West. In 1893, Fort Walton Beach became part of the United States when it gained independence from Spain. The U.S., through its Treasury Department, provided financial support for development at Fort Walton Beach and throughout Florida’s Missions district. From 1903 until 1934, Fort Walton Beach was managed by the military department responsible for strategic coastal defense activities in Florida under then-Secretary of War Newton Baker III. In 1934, FtWahnt Beaches did away with its military jurisdiction and became part ofBroward County government under then-County Manager Floyd McKee Jr.. As part of Broward County government’s efforts to modernize county services and make them more efficient, FtWahnt Beaches came under new management in 1986 as a public access park managed by the Broward Parks & Recreation Department with funding from federal environmental programs administered by NOAA/National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).
