The first major development in Fort Walton Beach took place in the early 1920s when two businessmen named Pritchett and Waddell built a resort on Long Key Island that remains one of the most successful vacation rentals in history today: Pritchett's Key Resort & Spa currently features over 25 beachfront rentals including 6 villas complete with private pool/sound system access and all-you-can-eat buffets for up to 80 guests each day! In 1933, Fort Walton Beach became an official U.S Naval installation when it was redesignated "Marine Corps Air Station Jacksonville". That same year saw the opening of Marine Aircraft Group 4 (MAG-4) which would become one of America's first jet fighter squadrons equipped with FW190 fighters! MAG-4 would remain active until 1946; however, their legacy will live on into this day as part of NAS Jacksonville's aviation heritage! With World War II Prelude swelling ashore near Miami just south of town proper - USAAF B-17 Flying Fortress bombers began bombing German workshops at Altenkirchen airfield continually throughout 1945 - RAF Coastal Command HQ moved from RAF Croydon Northamptonshire England to provide strategic support for Allied Forces – finally ending operations at Marham airfield Essex UK on 15th September 1945 after 444 combat missions! Fort Walton Beach proved invaluable during this time as both primary targets for communist airstrikes as well as providing logistical support for Operation Crossroads aka “the Great Escape” – codenamed “The Thousand Miles” – which culminated in more than 100 Allied POWs escaping from Japanese camps across Japan via MacArthur’s railway network October 1944 – January 1945 ..... eventually reaching Australiavia China Burma India etc……..

In 1861, Fort Walton Beach became part of Confederate Florida under General Robert E. Lee and served as a garrison for Confederate sailors stationed at nearby Jacksonville until 1865 when it surrendered to Union forces. After the Civil War ended, Fort Walton Beach reverted to civilian control and remains an unincorporated community today. The fortifications at Fort Walton Beach were rebuilt after Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of them in 1992. The rebuilt fortifications are now open to visitors for tours every day from 9am to 3pm EST/6pm to 11pm PST
Fort Walton Beach was founded on August 3, 1894 by Rear Admiral George Dewey and his staff. The fort was built to protect the Gulf of Mexico from piracy and other threats. It served as a staging ground for American military forces during World War I, II, and III. After the end of World War II, the fort was decommissioned and used as an ammunition depot. In 1969, it was purchased by the City of Fort Walton Beach and turned into a city park.
