By 1828, Stroud had built a wharf on Pensacola Bay with warehouses and dwellings for his guests. He also began to cultivate land around his resort and developed a small commercial fishing industry based on catch from PensacolaBay waters dating back to ancient Seminole tribes who used gaff nets to take fish from deep water off Mobile Bayou settlements along Gulf coast." In 1865 when Gainesville was established as a county seat by act of Congress following Florida's secession from Mexico, Fort Walton Beach became part of Gainesville Township; however it continued to be unincorporated until 1925 when it incorporated as a town under the name "Fort Walton Beach". After World War II ended, Fort Walton Beach reverted back to civilian control and it remained an airport until it was closed in 1969. Today, Fort Walton Beach is home to several thousand residents and is used primarily for vacation purposes.
