Fort Walton Beach is a town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,912 at the 2010 census. Fort Walton Beach is part of the Pensacola metropolitan area. The history of Fort Walton Beach can be traced back to 1821 when Spanish colonists founded the Presidio de Santa Rosa de la Bahía on an island in Mobile Bay. In 1824, General Andrew Jackson's army stormed and burned the Presidio; it was abandoned for good in 1826. In 1827, American traders arrived in what is now Fort Walton Beach and began trading with Spanish settlers. A lighthouse was built in 1828 to warn ships of Indian attacks off the coast; it remained operational until 1931. In 1861, Confederate forces captured Mobile Bay and forced Ulysses S. Grant to surrender at Gainesville Alabama before moving on to Pensacola where they established their new capital. By 1865, Fort Walton Beach had also fallen into Confederate hands and was used as a military garrison until Union forces recaptured it in 1865 after a three-month siege. In 1898, following annexation by Florida of most of Cuba, Fort Walton Beach became part of the newly created state of Florida; its name change followed that year's annexation referendum results (the vote resulted 53% for "Florida" over "Cuba").. As part of this process, many businesses within town were transferred from Pensacola to Tallahassee during this time period – some still remain there today including Walmart and Sears Roebuck & Co.. During World War II much activity took place at Camp White Sands which became known as "Gulfport". At one point more than 1 million soldiers were stationed here along with naval vessels and other equipment! The fortifications located here include: a battery (four guns), hospital barracks/quarters (ten buildings), powder storage tanks (two each), machine gun pits (sixteen total), artillery pieces (eightguns) and command post building/ Laboratory... Today only two guns remain from original battery while all others have been replaced or are being renovated/repaired... The Camp closed effective November 15th 1945 due to lack of funds which would later be diverted towards war effort elsewhere throughout Gulfport area! Although not directly impacted by war efforts itself Ft Walton beach residents continued to enjoy good recreational opportunities such as boating and fishing through out post thru 1946 however few jobs remained open due mainly to high rates associated with wartime government contracts

In 2006 it reopened as a government-owned secure community with recreation, education and business opportunities that are open to all residents regardless of race or gender identity
