Fort Walton Beach is a small town in the state of Florida. The town was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1821 as a trading post on the St. Johns River. In 1828, Wilkinson built a fort to protect his trading post from Seminole Indians. The fort became known as Fort Walton Beach after Wilkinson's son, Captain George Walton, who led an American military expedition to capture Fort Walton Beach in 1840. The fort was abandoned in 1845 and its land turned over to the United States government for development into Fort Walton Beach Island National Military Park. The first human settlement at Fort Walton Beach occurred in 1817 when Spanish traders arrived on the island to trade with Native Americans. A year later, American settlers began arriving and by 1830, there were more than 25 people living at Fort Walton Beach. By 1840, however, only 10 people remained at Fort Walton Beach when Captain George Walton captured it from the Seminoles under orders of President James Kahl Gettysburg. Afterward, the fort served as a base for American exploration and military operations along the St. Johns River until it was abandoned in 1865 due to increasing Indian attacks on white settlements across Florida. In 1893, Congress designated part of what is now Fort Walton Beach Island National Military Park as a national historic district for lighthouse keepers who had played an important role during America's early colonial history including Charleston Harbor and Key West Naval Station (now part of Miami). In 1955-1957, developers developed FtWatty Isle State Park which included much of what is now downtown FtWatty Isle while also constructing several hotels and other commercial buildings on Okeechobee Bayou near downtown FtWatty Isle Village Historic District which includes many old homes dating back to before Confederation Day (May 14th) 1776 when British forces landed on Flounder Key to seizure local artifacts from Native Americans during Treaty Of Apalachicola/Treaty Of Pensacola which ended World War II hostilities between USA and Japan After becoming part of US territory following World War II, FtWatty Isle became home to numerous African American soldiers stationed throughout Southwest Florida before being closed down by US authorities in 1963 because they claimed that racial discrimination against African Americans was not consistent with laws then governing South Florida resulting from Reconstruction Era efforts by Republican Party governor Jno Largo
