During World War II, Fort Walton Beach played an important role in providing naval gunfire support against Japanese forces during Operation Torch invasion in North Africa; later that year, it also received direct shelling from Japanese submarines while they took refuge within Miami Harbor during the Battle off Cape Canaveral. In 1965, after years of growth resulting from oil exploration conducted by BP Exploration Company at nearby Port Everglades,[3] Mayor Robert Wickenburg spearheaded efforts to rename Ft Walton Beach "Boca Raton" in order to better align it with Boca Raton's other popular tourist destination – The Palm Beaches – which were then being marketed as "The Riviera". This campaign resulted in increased business for both places due to increased exposure among vacationers who were unfamiliar with Ft Walton Beach's previous name (and thus more likely to book stays there). Today, Ft Walton Beach remains one of America's most popular tourist destinations thanks largely to its relaxed atmosphere combined with its abundant natural resources such as beaches and oceanfront properties; it is also home to many unique businesses including several golf courses and an aquarium/resort complex serving multiple purposes including housing units for low-income residents[4].
Fort Walton Beach, Florida is a town in the state of Alabama. The population was 1,383 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile–Troy–Biloxi metropolitan area. Fort Walton Beach is located on the Gulf Coast of Florida and bordered by Baldwin County to the north, Escambia County to the east, Holmes County to the south, and St. Johns County to the west. The first permanent European settlers in what would become Fort Walton Beach were Spanish soldiers who arrived in 1795 during Spain's invasion of Florida. The town was founded by Captain Manuel de la Hoz as a military post on Pensacola Bayou while Spanish forces fought against French forces besieging Havana. In 1821, after Spain ceded Florida to United States control, Fort Walton Beach became part of Mobile Territory under US rules and it remained so until 1959 when it was annexed into Mobile County. During World War II Fort Walton Beach served as an airfield for B-24 Liberator bombers based at nearby Biloxi before being turned over to USAAF use as an emergency landing ground for pilots returning from missions over Japan in 1945. After hostilities ended fortifications were erected around what is now downtown Ft Walton Beach and other areas during 1946-1948 following passage of Act No 9of that year which authorized reparation payments totaling $1 billion dollars ($ in present day money)to Japanese Americans who had been incarcerated during World War II at concentration camps near Phoenix Arizona and elsewhere across America including Camp Montero near San Diego California where more than 200,000 Japanese American men and women died from injuries or disease caused by allied bombing raids; most killed working on munitions plants or processing food for army field commanders’ troops fighting in Europe; also many living among native Hawaiian people engaged in agriculture or simple services such as construction work on main thoroughfares throughout area prior to surrendering these lands outright unto U.S., upon return home began process of forced relocation known euphemistically as “the naturalization process” Most all residents within city limits had surrendered their right-of-way within 10 days preceding end of hostilities thereby allowing complete clearance by U.S authorities prior thereto with few if any opposition; less than 2% remaining resistance prior surrender occurred due primarily to fear they would not be able get back onto their ancestral land once status quo restored In total more than 100,000 individuals (mostly Japanese Americans) were forcibly relocated across country during WWII without proper compensation or announcement thereof save for immediate family members who received VISAS (visa programs provided temporary residency permits allowing entry into America).
