The first Europeans to visit what is now Fort Walton Beach were Spanish explorers in 1513 who named it "Ventura." In 1821 Englishman John Crayton made an unsuccessful attempt to establish a trading post at what is now Fort Walton Beach after discovering Brazil's sugarcane trade route from Cuba. The first African American born in South Florida arrived here in 1865 when Jacob Aptheker purchased land from Etta Baker for $225 ($ today). He built his home called Aptheker's Bluff which still stands today. By 1870 approximately 350 white and black American settlers had moved into this area including 280 men veterans of the Seminole Wars fought against Spanish forces as well as their Indian allies during America's turning point known as the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). The original town site was 2 miles wide by 1 mile long with a single square block for each 250 residents. The first store opened its doors on July 4th, 1871. When Ft Walton Beach became an incorporated municipality on January 1st, 1907 it had a population of 3,714 people living in 522 buildings spread over an area measuring 16 acres which included present day downtown and all 6 military posts within its boundaries: West Point barracks (later Posey Barracks), East Point naval ammunition depot (later Naval Air Station Everglades), North Point hospital (later Everglades Hospital), and Camp Blanding which housed troops guarding US$5 million in Cuban sugar bonds being imported through Key West before they were sold to Spain at auction. With World War I raging across Europe and America demand for munitionssubstantial shipments continued despite U boats patrolling off Pensacola Bay Forts Monroe & St Johns main shipping dock kept things moving!.. On October 16th 1918 USS Alabama WWII Museum ship stopped at Ft Walton beach while enroute to Key Largo International Airport bound for Guantanamo Bay Cuba bringing back 400 surplus WW1 German Army vehicles along with assorted artillery pioneer equipment plus uniforms Many items from this collection are on display inside museum today

The development of firearms began in China around 350 BC when an anonymous Chinese artist drew up plans for a crossbow that could be fired with arrows instead of bolts. This weapon would later be renamed “the bow” after its inventor – possibly because he could not find anyone else who could replicate his invention successfully! Firearms started being developed in Europe much earlier than this – handguns such as the musket were invented in 15th century England! However, it wasn’t until 16th century Spain that cannons became widely available throughout Europe! At this point, artillery (firearms used bombs or shells) became important For political reasons; armies needed to be able to bombard cities without fear of them being attacked back! It was during this time period that Europeans realized how effective artillery can be when used against human targets! Gunnery techniques improved greatly during this time thanks largely to Dutch engineers working on fortifications and warships like Holland Castle (which still stands today).
