The first European settler in what is now Fort Walton Beach was James A. Pickens, who arrived on horseback in 1821. He named the place "Hollywood" after his employer's home town of Hollywood, Alabama. In 1824, Captain John Fitch established a trading post here with supplies from Georgia and Alabama. By 1840, Fort Walton Beach had become a significant port on the St Johns River due to its location close to both Jacksonville and Miami. In 1851, Congress authorized development of Bahia de Cuba—now Bayamon—and assigned Commandant General William Troup to lead a military expedition there against Spanish forces under Lieutenant General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna y Costilla that year. After only six weeks of operations, Troup's force was soundly defeated by Mexican forces at Yuma Creek (near present-day Pensacola). The defeat led to increased American interest in Cuban exploration; this interest also led to increased Spanish activity along the St Johns River corridor as well as establishment of forts at nearby Parañaque and Mequique across from modern day Fort Walton Beach. In 1865 local businessman Henry Hanks purchased 1/4 acre (0·25 ha) of land near present day Fort Walton Beach Boulevard from Joséfina Rodriguez de la Rúa y Ponce for $100 worth of goods he had brought back overland from Mexico City on his trip around South America that season. Hanks soon constructed two small wooden buildings known today as Hanks House and Store which served as his headquarters until 1870 when he sold all his interests in Bahia de Cuba to John Witherspoon Forbes for $1 million dollars which made him one of the most successful men in Florida during that period. By 1880Bahia de Cuba had been rechristened "Fort Walton Beach". During World War II Ft Walton Beach became an important naval base with many troops being mustered here before being sent overseas where they were used in various combat roles including ground fighting against Japan throughout World War II as well as providing materiel support for Allied forces during Operation Overlord . After hostilities ceased all personnel were discharged except for some Korean veterans who remained until their return home following the Korean War in 1953 . Today Ft Walton beach still hosts regular Naval Surface Warfare Center activities such as underway testing operations associated with submarine deployments while also housing numerous civilian agencies like DHS Customs & Border Protection , UF Health Sciences Center etc., making it one of busiest communities within Everglades National Park .

The fortifications were never rebuilt; today they serve as tourist attractions known as "the ghost towns." During World War II, Fort Walton Beach served as an airfield for B-29s based at Key West Airport northwest of town. Afterward it reverted back to its original civilian status until 1985 when it was again converted into a military base named Camp David where troops from across the United States trained for Desert Stormblow Operation Enduring Freedom
