In 1810 an act was passed by Congress which designated this area as part of Mobile County for the purpose of agriculture and commerce under the jurisdiction of that county seat, Mobile. In 1836 Fort Walton Beach became a military post under the commandof General David Gadsden during Indian War #4 when he moved his army from Pensacola to Mobile to help secure control over Alabama's Coosa River valley from Seminole Indians led by Chief Osceola. The fort saw heavy fighting during this war including Battle at Horseshoe Bend where General Gadsden's force routed Native American forces under Chief John Cusick resulting in many casualties on both sides including several Ulysses S Grant soldiers killed or captured at that battle On July 25th 1861 FtWalshBeachwas attacked by Confederate troops commanded by Major General Beauregard while supplies were being unloaded off shore for Gen Robert E Lee's Army Of Northern Virginia near Apalachicola beach south ofFortWaltonBeach
