Fort Walton Beach, Florida was one of the earliest settlements in what is now Walton County, Florida. The area that would become Fort Walton Beach was first populated by Seminole Indians and then by white people. The first permanent settler in what is now Fort Walton Beach was a group of Englishmen who came to the area in 1821. They named it after Lord Dunmore's Colony, which they had visited earlier that year. At the time, there were no towns or villages within present-day Walton County; development instead took place along the banks of the St Johns River. In 1827, Spanish colonists arrived in Florida and began to build presidios (military posts) around what are now Jacksonville and Ft Myers. One of these Spanish forts, San Pedro de Allende, stood on an island near where Fort Walton Beach would later be built. In 1828, American settlers arrived in support of General Andrew Jackson during his campaign against Mexico. These settlers named their new town after General Jackson himself – Jacksonville Beaches became known as "Jax." The town rapidly grew due to its location and its role as a military outpost. By 1830, Jacksonville Beaches had a population of about 200 people and two stores. By 1840, the population had grown to about 4500 people and 12 businesses. The fort at Jacksonville Beaches served as a pivot point for trade between both America and Europe because it was close to both points of entry intoFloridafor goods brought overland from North Americaand Europerespectively. A wharf was also constructed at Jacksonville Beachesin order to facilitate shipping activity surroundingFlorida's fledgling slave trade industrywhich provided much needed labor for plantations south of Tampa Bay
Fort Walton Beach was founded on August 24, 1839 by Captain John Stroud and his men from the USS George Washington. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson, who had helped to defeat Mexican forces at the Battle of Pensacola in 1814. The first post office opened in 1840.
