The town of Fort Walton Beach was established in 1946 when the military closed down all but one of its original posts and buildings were taken over for housing and business purposes. The last post closed down in 1984 after being replaced by Everglades National Park's Hendrickson Post Office building on US 41 near mile marker 231 south of downtown Ft Walton Beach
