In 1821, American military officers renamed it Fort Walton Beach because they thought it would be more attractive to civilians than Spanish Fort which stood on an island off the coast of Jacksonville. By 1825, General James Wilkinson had established a post here and by 1828, there were over 100 soldiers living here. In 1893, entrepreneur WK Kellogg donated land for a seaside resort with baths and restaurants called "Walking World". This became one of the largest amusement park complexes in America and remains one of the most popular tourist destinations today. Kellogg also founded KFC which continues to operate today as one of Americas leading fast food chains with over $66 billion in annual sales worldwide

When the Spanish discovered Florida in 1513, they named it Santa Maria la Antigua de Fort Walton Beach. However, the Spaniards didn't stay long in this area and by 1667, they had abandoned what is now Fort Walton Beach. The first permanent English settlers arrived in 1763 and called the place "Winchester". In 1821, Gaines County was created from parts of Brevard and Sarasota counties. At that time, Winchester was a small town on the Gulf coast ofFlorida. In 1866, Congress passed an act which designated Fort Walton Beach as a military post to be used for observation of Indian Reservations east of the Mississippi River. General James Hays commanding Brigade fortress at Pensacola took control of Fort Walton Beach on December 12th 1863 after outfiring Confederate forces under General John Bate at Battle of Econchita Creek near Stonington (now Jacksonville). In 1898, during World War I Ft Walton Beach became a Navy air base with 3 Naval Air Station(NAF) squadrons stationed here including VMF-13 squadron flying German Zeppelins which were shot down over Florida on October 8th 1915 while flown by US pilots from NAS Daiquiri Island-Ibigaland Mexico City Squadron flying Japanese bombers . Jacksonville also became an important naval center with USS Constitution drydock being built here between 1917 - 1919 which allowed United States Naval Forces Central America to supply their ships with supplies and bring troops home from World War I . After World War II ended there were only a few personnel left at Ft Walton Beach when it closed on September 2nd 1946 due to lack of funding for its military functions. By 1950 Ft Walton Beach had become just another summer tourist spot but since then it has seen many changes with most notably its current incarnation as one of the most popular vacation destinations in Florida
