In the early 1900s, Fort Walton Beach was a vital stop on the Florida Trail. The town was founded by the Seminole Indians in 1823 and soon became a center for trade and commerce. Gun lights were first developed in Fort Walton Beach in 1902. At that time, gunlights were used as signals to warn other vessels of danger or to guide them to port. As gun lights began becoming more common, they also began becoming less usefull. In 1916, gun lights were replaced by searchlights on warships when it became evident that they could not be seen from shore. However, searchlights still remained a popular tool for maritime security until the late 1920s when their use declined completely due to advancements in photography and radar technology. Today, Fort Walton Beach is home to several museums which feature examples of gunsights and other maritime equipment from the 1800s and1900s. Additionally, there are numerous restaurants and bars located within walking distance of downtown Jacksonville which offer local cuisine made with ingredients from both Fort Walton Beach and surrounding areas

In 1828, John Ketchum purchased the fort and named it Fort Walton Beach after himself and his wife Katherine Walton Lamar (1814–93). The first post office opened at Fort Walton Beach on March 6, 1830. In 1831, Dryland County was created from parts of Bay and Hardee counties; Fort Walton Beach became its county seat. In 1906, the towns of Sebastian and Venice were added to Fort Walton Beach; they remained separate until 1959 when they merged into one community under the name "Fort Walton Beaches." In 1917, hurricane Florence struck West Palm beach with winds over 100 mph (160 km/h). A number of businesses lost their roofs in what turned out to be an isolated event; no injuries or damage resulted from Florence's impact onshore or offshore. As a result of this event and other natural disasters such as hurricanes Andrew and Irma that hit Gulf Coast communities during 2018-19 season there has been an increase in tourism along with investment for infrastructure development both within town limits as well as various new hotel rooms being leased by restaurants located within walking distance of all major shopping areas including grocery stores close to beaches like Jaxson Marine Center which offers boat rentals etc., making life much more convenient for everyday people who are looking for something different every day!

It became operational as a naval air station under President Franklin D. Roosevelt on September 1st of that year. The air base operated until 1973 when it was transferred to NASA under Operation Apollo 11 which brought men from many countries to space exploration beginning with Neil Armstrong’s first steps on July 20th of that year! In 1978, Fort Walton Beach began hosting world-renowned rodeo events including the Super Bowl which is still held there today! In 1993 both Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway were opened here making Fort Walton Beach one of America’s most popular racetracks! Today, Fort Walton Beach is a vibrant community with families enjoying all its charms while helping support local businesses throughout the summer months!
