Fort Walton Beach is a city in Bay County, Florida, United States. The population was 24,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. The name "Fort Walton Beach" comes from Spanish for "Island of Walnuts". The first Europeans to visit Fort Walton Beach were Giovanni da Vergara and his party on October 12, 1565. They came ashore from their shipwrecked vessel off the coast of Georgia and named the island Isla de las Nieves after one of their crewmen, Alonso de la Hoya. In 1836, traders John J. Ruskin and Elisha Stuart built a fort on what is now known as State Road 9 near present-day Fort Walton Beach in order to protect themselves and their goods during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). A post office was established at Fort Walton Beach in 1868, and remained in operation until 1935. In 1903, Fort Walton Beach became a town under Indian Territory when that territory was split between Florida and Texas following the US annexation of Mexico into America. The town charter was approved November 10th by voters within two days of each other; however it took until 1915 for all chores associated with town government such as streetlights, water supply, sewerage systems etc., to be completed. By 1920 most services had been completed but there were still many challenges awaiting residents such as lack of a library or bathroom facilities on Main Street which led to long lines outside stores when opening hours! The first store opened in downtown Ft Walton Beach on May 17th 1920 by Wm Fenton an American who had come down from Tampa to help run things along with his friend Rufus Cody who ran the hardware store next door! After just 2 years active business there only consisted of 2 people working part time! This store later closed but reopened under new ownership as Mrs Vaught's grocers! While downtown Ft Walton was slowly becoming more popular with tourists beginning to arrive by boat through Clearwater Harbor some businesses decided they would move closer to provide better access especially coffee shops like Cafe Donato which started serving coffee 7am - 2pm daily! A few years later gas pumps began appearing around town along with kerosene lamps making Ft Walton beach one of the most lit places on Earth! These types of amenities helped spur business growth during this time period not only for locals but also for nearby towns such as Dunedin which started seeing a increase in tourism due to its proximity to FtWalton beaches

Despite being one of America's most important naval stations during World War II, Fort Walton Beach closed in 1945 due to budgetary constraints following the end of hostilities. However, it reopened as a research center in 1984 after years of renovation and redevelopment which included creating new public spaces along with expanding existing businesses including an amusement park and a hotel chain known today as Wyndham Worldwide Resort & Casino ().
