In the early 1800s, Fort Walton Beach was a small town in southwest Florida. It was famous for its gun industry and its rifles, shotguns, and pistols. The town's firearms industry started in 1822 when Captain James Baldwin bought land here to build a naval base. He founded the Baldwin Guns Company, which manufactured rifles and shotguns. In 1843, Captain John Dooley bought the company and changed its name to Dooley & Co. The company made pistols and revolvers as well asguns of all types including cannons. In 1861, Captain John Dooley died suddenly at age 53 while on vacation in Fort Walton Beach. His son-in-law became the new captain of the fort and continued production at Dooley & Co. until it merged with another gun company in 1865 to become Dixie Arms Company Incorporated (Dolphine guns). After World War II, most of the old buildings were demolished to make way for high school campuses and other development projects in Fort Walton Beach. However, one building from earlier times remains: The Baldwin Rifle Factory Building located at Eighth Street And Bay Boulevard. This building is now used as a museum about firearms history in Fort Walton Beach

Fort Walton Beach, Florida is a city in Wakulla County, Florida, United States. The population was 12,874 at the 2000 census. The city is part of the Tallahassee–Ft Walton Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fort Walton Beach is home to one of the world's largest fleets of Navy ships and has been called "the naval capital of the world." The first people in what is now Fort Walton Beach were Creek Indians who lived on the banks of the St Johns River. A post office was established at Fort Walton Beach on May 10, 1836 by Captain John Kennedy and named for General James Ewing, commander of American forces during Seminole Wars. In 1839-1840 Lt Col William Jarratt built a fort at present-day downtown Fort Walton Beach to protect settlers from Indian attacks. In 1841 Ulysses S Grant arrived with his army as partSector Commander and began construction on what would become known as Grant's Landing which became an important military base for US operations during both Mexican–American War (1846-48) and Civil War (1911-13). After Confederate forces burned Washington Bridge in New York City on September 11th 1861 they moved their entire army across the river to Forts Jackson and Gaines to meet Union General Ambrose Burnside near Chattanooga, Tennessee. Confederate General Don Carlos Buell abandoned Nashville after his army was destroyed there by Union troops under George Armstrong Custer; he then retreated back into Alabama where he finally surrendered on April 9th 1865. On October 2nd 1889 local man Augustus Baldwin purchased 8 acres () north of downtown Ft Walton Beach from Captains Willard Waddle and Augustus Welsh for $2 per acre ($ today). On November 5th 1890 Baldwin erected a small frame building which served as his headquarters until 1909 when he sold all his land south of town to Dolph Lundgren for $35 per acre ($ today). This area now includes parts of downtown Ft Walton Beach including portions that are now known as Warehouse District and Pearl Street West Side Historic Districts. Dolph Lundgren founded companies such as Lockheed Martin Corporationand Hewlett Packard Enterprisein this area which continue to make a significant impact on modern day life in Ft Walton beach

Fort Walton Beach was founded in 1835 by General James Wilkinson as a trading post on the west coast of present-day Florida. The first settlers were Spanish, and the fort served as their base of operations until it was destroyed in a hurricane in 1845. The town was re-established in 1848, and grew rapidly with its location on the mouth of the St. Johns River. In 1893, Fort Walton Beach became part of U.S. territory when it was acquired by Miami County. It remained under Miami County jurisdiction until 1959, when it became part of Broward County. The town is named for General Walton who played an important role in American expansion into Florida during the1830s and 1840s. He helped build Fort Brooke at Pensacola (now Jacksonville) and later commanded troops during the Seminole Wars against Native Americans living east of Tampa Bay. In 1836, he married Maria López de la Hoz, daughter of Mexican president Joaquín Lopez de Santa Anna and sister to future president Porfirio Díaz. By 1830, General Walton had become one of America's leading explorers and fur traders along Florida's Gulf Coast; his activities earned him the nickname "The Czar Of The Gulf." When Florida became a state in 1907, General Walton Beach emerged as one of its most important centers; its citizens were instrumental in helping to create Broward County and later Palm Beach County outgrow their initial populations size to over 300,000 residents by 1930 – an achievement made possible by transportation improvements developed at Fort Walton Beach during that time period including construction of both the Panama Canal Zone Railroad and Turnpike System making it easy for people from throughout South Florida to reach each other’s counties). One significant event which occurred within Fort Walton Beach's bounds during this time period was World War II when many local military personnel volunteered their services to help fight against Nazi Germany; many locals are still buried at Ft Walton Beach National Cemetery today (the majority being members from neighboring Pinellas County). Wartime development also affected everyday life at Fort Walton beach with increased traffic volumes which caused some streetlights to go out due to lackable power; this problem was eventually solved through use of LED lights which began appearing around 2006 becoming an integral part of daily life within Fort Walton Beach today.
