The Portuguese also visited Fort Walton Beach in 1665 and 1667; however, they did not make any permanent settlement. In 1835, General James Kenedy founded the Department of Indian Affairs at Fort Walton Beach after defeating Seminole forces near present-day Pensacola. In 1838, Ulysses S. Grant became President of the United States and ordered all federal troops out of Florida; this led to increased competition for land between white settlers and Native Americans. In 1840s a group of Englishmen known as "Red Shirt" settlers arrived from Liverpool via Mobile Bay and established themselves on Santa Rosa dei Carmelis Island just off Fort Walton Beach with help from local traders and natives (the Red Shirts were later expelled by Spanish authorities). Over time more English colonists arrived including some who had fought against British forces during the American Revolution; these men soon adopted surnames such as Knox (from Massachusetts), Adams (from Connecticut), Barton (from Virginia), Lovegood (from Sussex) and others which remain today among Ft Walton beach's most prominent residents even though their descendants no longer live there full-time or maintain any close ties with their old home city/townsite: many settled down within nearby Pensacola proper where they formed important civic organizations including one now leading developer along with its namesake street once named for them - Red Shirt Road running through downtown - before eventually moving away altogether when Hurricane Andrew struck mainland Floridas several years later causing extensive destruction although some partial rebuilding took place culminating in recent development efforts that have brought much needed life back into what has been struggling economy over recent years A post office called Santa Rosa dei Carmelis was established at this point but it never received an mail service due to Indians being able to get letters slowed down by sailing times instead In 1845 Congress authorized construction of a military post at Greatshell Point on Nicholas Island east side bayou Saint Johns which served as Battalion Headquarters until storage facilities were built on Blake's Landing peninsula adjacent thereto in 1848 By 1850 Ft Walton Beaches had grown rapidly becoming a boomtown with large amount of imported goods coming ashore via riverboats either unloaded ontoshore or transported upriver again thence exchanged for local produce onboard disembarking steamers continuing upriver past Mound Key before arriving safely at Jacksonville whereupon large amounts were sold immediately Downtown resulting in rapid transformation from agricultural community into fashionable resort town center characterized by grand high rise buildings featuring elaborate mansions designed by noted landscape architect Prentice Russell alias "Flying Saucer" popularly know then as "Dragons Den" because his high-profile practice involved designing numerous famous Gulf Coast resorts including Colonial Dragoons Resort located now offshore about 5 miles southeastof Jacksonville itself well beyond soundings made during early 21st century aerial surveys conducted during period 2005 - 2009 particularly noting significant Increase & Development taking Place within Historic District boundaries since RailRoad Reopened following major rebuild project nearly 4 decades ago www
