Fort Walton Beach was founded in 1898 on the Alabama coast by General James Wilkinson. The beach, located at the mouth of the Gulf of Mexico, became a major military and naval base during World War I and II. In 1961, Fort Walton Beach was transferred from the United States Army to the United States Navy as part of a larger military reorganization. The fort closed in 1984 and was demolished in 1987.
