In 1899, Fort Walton Beach was the first town in Florida to be established. The town was named after Major General John C. Gaines, who had been born in Mobile, Alabama and died at Ft. Walton Beach in 1885. The first settlers were white men from Georgia and Tennessee and they built a log cabin on the beach. On July 4, 1899, the town of Fort Walton Beach was chartered by a group of local citizens. In 1903, the U.S Military began construction of an airfield at what is now Fort Walton Beach Airport. The airfield served as a training ground for American pilots during World War I and World War II. After the war ended, the United States Air Force used the airport for civilian purposes until it closed in 1962. The post-war years saw a boom inFort Walton Beach tourism as visitors arrived to see new businesses and attractions that had developed since then. In 1978, Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of downtown Fort Walton Beach and caused extensive damage to many buildings including archives dating back to 1898 which still stand today (the hurricane also knocked out power to much of southern Florida). Despite this setback, business continued to grow with new development continuing into the late 1990s when Hurricane Genevieve hit mainland Florida causing significant damage along with flooding throughout much of southwestern Miami-Dade County which led some businesses owners to move their operations inland into safer areas such as Milton or Vero Beach where they continue today as small businesses known only by their initial letters rather than their full names (eGuns being one such example). Fort Walton Beach is a small town in Leon County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Hialeah Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fort Walton Beach is located on the southern fringe of the Everglades National Park and it is one of six towns in the park. The area that now makes up Fort Walton Beach was first settled by Africans working as slaves on sugar plantations in what is now Miami-Dade County. As white settlers began to arrive in this area during the mid 1800s, they began to purchase land and settle it into villages or hamlets. One such village was called "Walton", after General Nathaniel Walton who fought against Spanish forces in Florida during the War for Independence. In 1892, a group of businessmen from nearby Pompano Beach purchased 640 acres (256 hectares) of land east of Interstate 95 between State Road 431 and US 98. They named their new community "Fort Walton Beach" after General Walton's fortification near Pensacola Bayou). The town quickly grew due to its location close to water supplies and its easy access to jobs in construction and commerce. By 1925, Fort Walton Beach had over 2,000 residents and had become an important stop on the southern route used by truckloads of citrus fruit from Orange County down through Tampa Bay to Miami before being shipped across country aboard ships bound for Europe or North America. During World War II, Fort Walton Beach played an important role as a landing ground for troops advancing along I-95 towards Central America through Palm Springs and Indio respectively; however most activity ceased when war ended on September 2, 1945. After World War II, many businesses closed down but local residents kept busy with various activities including fishing, boatbuilding and swimming until 1971 when all but two buildings were destroyed by fire caused by careless storage practices within town limits
