In 1870–71, local merchant James Prentice developed land east of where City Hall stands for use as a naval reserve training ground for Coast Guardsmen; this led to the name "Prentice Park." The first school in Fort Pierce opened in 1870 and soon afterwards began facilities for public Instructional purposes; this included an Agricultural School (1871), Mechanics School (1872), High School (1875), Female Seminary (1876), eventually making Ft Pinecrest one of the most comprehensive secondary schools west of Philadelphia or New York City. In 1888–89, work began on building additional structures atCity Hall including a wing designed by architect George Wernham who also designed nearby Lock Haven Naval Air Station which became operational as Miami Beach Municipal Airport six years later Alderman Brazile organized fundraising effort which raised $2 million dollars to construct new buildings including Armory Annex (now Broward Community College) which opened in 1898; this marked beginning of large scale redevelopment within city limits typified by waves of annexations culminating with establishment of Everglades National Park within city limits in 1959 In 1902 Ftpierce incorporated under state law with Mayor Fenton leading efforts to promote growth through promotion of retail industry etc.; incorporation increased commerce generating over $10 million annually although tax burden remained high relative to other Floridas town/city ratios .During World War I there were several bomb scares throughout town resulting primarily from munitions storage being located just outside city Limits .Following Armistice all shipyards closed but some continued production until 1945 when they were sold off to developers creating Point Clarence Naval Base which continues operation today .As result Of various industrial conversions & post war boom period locals generally view themselves as beneficiaries rather than creators New economy has not been embraced well & many still struggle economically
