Fort Pierce, Florida is a town in southern Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 13,694 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Pierce–New Port Richey–West Palm Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fort Pierce were Spanish conquistadors in 1565 and they named it "San Marcos". The fort was built by Spain as an outpost on the Indian River between Stonington and Fort Myers. In 1821, the United States acquired land east of the Everglades and developed it into Jacksonville Landing for military personnel and their families. After America's admission to the Union in 1781, General James K. Polk built a post here as part of his effort to secure water supplies for Florida from Mexico. From this fort he could monitor vessels passing through Lake Okeechobee and protect Tampa Bay from Spanish incursions. In 1827, Major John Wilkinson erected a new redoubt at present-day downtown Fort Pierce which served as headquarters for U.S./Allied forces during Southwest Asia while also providing defense against Seminole attacks on Umatilla Island off Jupiter Inlet inlet during American Indian Wars (1835-1846). After := 1800; Fort Pierce was established at what is now called Business Street NW on December 8th 1800 when Spanish explorer Don Miguel de la Faja discovered San Marcos Flats (now known as Fort Pierce) about 12 miles due south of Stonington via his route overland from Cuba following La Brea Tar Pits Trail he had discovered earlier that year while exploring South Florida with Hernando De Soto’s expedition party under command . Fort Pierce was founded in 1821 as a fort on the east bank of the St. Johns River. The fort was abandoned in 1834, and it was not until 1860 that a new fort was built at this site by the United States Army. This fort served as a military post for many years, but it was decommissioned in 1926. Fort Pierce became an unincorporated community after that time.
