The history of rifle stocks in Fort Pierce, Florida begins with the early American Revolution. The first Americans to settle in what is now Fort Pierce were the founders of the town of Indian River. They were farmers and traders who traveled through the area looking for land. One day they found a piece of land that would become Fort Pierce. The settlers named their new town after General James K. Polk, who had helped lead America into World War I. The fort was built in 1811 by Major John Putnam. It was used as a trading post and later became home to the United States Military Academy which educated future generals and admirals. In 1898, the United States acquired Fort Pierce from Spain for $2 million dollars. The fort was renamed “Fort Pierce Army Base” and its residents were relocated to nearby Miramar Naval Air Station where they continued to live until 1959 when it was transferred back to Spain under an agreement between America and Spain that ended World War II. In 1957, Fort Pierce City Council decided that it would be more efficient if all city services were provided by one central office rather than having them located at various locations throughout the city. This decision led to the construction of what is now known as City Hall on Southeast Second Street near Monroe Avenue in downtown Fort Pierce. From this location, City Hall served as both a municipal government center and headquarters for most aspects of city life including police departments, fire departments, street cleaning, elections, etcetera. In addition, City Hall housed two large murals created by architect Edward Durell Stone:one depicting local dignitaries attending a formal dinner at City Hall; and another portraying workers putting finishing touches on sculpture outside the building’s walls during construction.] On July 1st, 1996, Mayor Don Gorman announced that he would not seek re-election next year due to his health condition which had been deteriorating over time.[Gorman retired from public life following his successful run for Governor in 1992] On November 3rd ballots were mailed out asking citizens whether they wanted their mayor impeached or not because he had not complied with state law which required him to timely file reports on his finances]. After months of debate within elected officials and community members alike[], voters voted 81% against impeachment proceedings being brought against Mayor Gorman – making him one of only two mayors in Miami-Dade County history who have never been impeached while living peacefully behind closed doors!
