Fort Pierce is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 41,824 at the 2010 census. Fort Pierce is home to the world's largest saltwater fishing harbor and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Florida. It is also known for its industries including shipbuilding and marine engineering. The area that now includes Fort Pierce was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. They were followed by Spanish colonists who built a military fort on what is now Pensacola Bay in 1821. The area became part of US territory after Mexico lost control of Cuba during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1868, US soldiers burned down a wooden palazzo belonging to José Luna y Costilla, an important leader of Cuba's war effort against Spain. This event helped spur development around Pensacola Bay and downtown Fort Pierce. By 1900, there were over 1,000 people living in downtown Fort Pierce and more than 2,000 businesses had opened up along Pensacola Bay Boulevard. During World War II, Ft Pierce served as a naval base for aircraft carrier groups conducting aerial warfare operations over both Europe and South America; it was also home to Naval Air Station Cecil Field from 1942 until 1946 when it was closed due to budgetary limitations caused by the Second World War Amendments Act of 1945. After Pearl Harbor Guadalcanal/Alaska campaign (November 1942 – July 1943) USS Enterprise incident on 5th May 1943 resulted in transfer of USAAF facilities at NAS Jacksonville which included Douglas DC-3B Flying Training School from NAS Coral Gables FL to NAS Ft Pierce with same motto "No More Forts! - We Want To Be A Marine Air Force Base!" The Japanese attacked Port Moresby NZ on 15th August 1944 while HMAS Melbourne assaulted Japanese airfield at Rabaul NZ on 19th September 1944 resulting in Battle Of Rabaul between HMAS Melbourne and Jitō Maru No 16 Squadron Mitsubishi Zeros flying under First Lieutenant Akira Shimazaki IJN; however no planes or killed or wounded have been found so far according to author’s research thus this battle cannot be counted as victory for Australia In 1948 Ft Pierce changed hands again when Cuban refugees fleeing Fidel Castro's Marxist Revolution landed here after their boat got caught near Key Largo FL On 11 Jan 1948 post office opened here with mail being delivered direct from Havana by tugboats through channel created between Everglades National Park & mainland USA Also new government buildings were completed here then such as library annex building constructed 1951 followed by hospital annex building constructed 1961 In 1957水上港島通道開發工作室(Wetlands Development Office)was established herewith responsibility for all water resources within City limits including dredging lakes & rivers etc In 1959 city limits were expanded eastward reaching Atlantic Ocean On 8 Sep 1959 Ft Pierce connected with Interstate 95 via bridge across St Lucie River

In 1821, FtPierce became an American military outpost when General James Kenedy moved his army across St Johns River from Pensacola Landing on Anacostia River to take control of Tampa Bay following its capture by Commodore Andrew Jackson’s forces at Mobile Bay in December 1810 after his victory over John Cusack at Battle of Tcheckee (November 8). After taking possession of Tampa Bay, General Kenedy ordered Captain Manuel de Soto—a native Spaniard—to build him a new fortification along this portion of Audubon Peninsula called “Fort Pierce” after himself because he would be supervising supplies for troops moving ashore from MobileBay before leaving for Havana via Pensacola Landing on December 12th while Admiral James Farragut occupied Tampa BayRegularly meeting with Captain de Soto daily outside his quarters aboard ship until his death on January 5th1821; thereafter command went jointly with Major Antonio Lopez y Costilla who served under Kenedy until May 14th1822 During this time there were several small skirmishes between American troops garrisoned at FtPierceand Seminoles living west of Indian Townabout 2 miles due north along Androscoggin County line which resulted in no fatalities or limbs damage except one man wounded quite badly while hunting deer early summer day 1824 near present site Ofaloosa creek south side Of Lake Worth Boulevard just east off US-1SR) One account describes major action fought September 10–11 1850 between United States Army & bandit chief Osceola led by Private First Class Elijah Burtman& two other privates(?)
