During the late 1800s Biscayne Bay served as an important natural harbor for shipping along with Ship Channel (now Busch Gardens) near today’s intersection of Northwest 1st Street and First Avenue S., making it an ideal place for military activities including submarines launching from Everglades Naval Air Station just north of town (the Stennis Space Center). With access to these assets available from downtown Fort Pierce, some believe that this might have been why Venice Beach resided within easy reach while Daytona Beach had to travel inland on a circuitous path around Lake Kissimmee ever since Commodore John Hawkins landed there on July 4th 1699 seeking passage back home across the ocean etcetera etcetera

He reached Stonington Bay on October 10th but no one answered his summons for dinner because there were no natives living there then or any knowledge of such a place; instead he landed about 30 men at anchor under cover of darkness and built himself a small shelter which he named "Fort George". This initial attempt at colonization failed due to difficulties getting water or food and so Captain Smith abandoned his efforts two years later when he learned that Spain had already established itself in that territory with their own colony just down the river (St Augustine). In 1800, José de la Cruz y Costilla set out from Havana with 400 soldiers to found Stonington Bay Colony on what is now Asbury Park Boulevard near modern day City Hall Plaza; however, within weeks most of La Cruz's men had died from fever contracted while exploring near Tampa Hillsborough County line.
