On November 5, 1903, the first American military rifle was fielded at Fort Pierce by U.S. Colonel George Armstrong Custer and his troop of cavalrymen in what is now Fort Pierce, Florida. The rifle was a Winchester Model 1892 chambered for the 7 mm semi-automatic cartridge.

The library was dedicated on October 6, 2007 by then President George W Bush.[2] In February 2009 it was announced that Amazon would build a second headquarters in Northern Florida called "HQ2" within 20 miles (32 km) of Fort Pierce. The company said that it would create more than 50 000 jobs in what would be an ethnically diverse area including Hispanic/Latino workers who could bring their families to work near them while still maintaining access to quality education and healthcare services

Fort Pierce was founded in 1836 by the United States as a trading post on the St. Johns River. It was renamed Fort Pierce in 1841 after Major General James F. Phelan, who had commanded American forces during the Seminole Wars. The fort served as an outpost and military base for American settlers until it was abandoned in 1865. The fort is today a museum open to the public.
