After the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in February 2018, many people across the country have called for gun reform. The Fort Pierce Shooting Memorial was established in honor of those killed and injured during the massacre. The Fort Pierce Shooting Memorial is a granite monument that stands at the corner of Siesta Key Boulevard and Fort Pierce Boulevard in Fort Pierce, Florida. It was dedicated on December 13, 2017, by then-Mayor Rick Scott. The memorial contains a bronze plaque honoring victims of the shootings as well as their families. The firstFort Pierce Shooting Memorial was erected on October 12, 1949 by United States Coast Guard personnel stationed at Miami Beach Naval Station. The gazebo that now stands atop the memorial was built to commemorate the dead of World War II veteran James "Jimmy" Sheehan and his wife Marie Sheehan who were killed when their home caught fire while they were returning from dinner at a nearby beach resort on October 12th, 1949. In 2013, Mayor Carlos Gimenez unveiled plans for an expansion of the museum which would include a library and exhibit space onsite as well as additional public hallways connecting it to other city museums across South Florida. That proposal failed to gain attention due to budget constraints; however, Mayor Gimenez did make mention of expanding the museum during his State oftheCity Address in November 2016.

Texas Asphalt Company built large surface lots east of downtown Ft Pierce for development beginning in 1915; these areas are now known as East Fort Pierce and West Fort Pierce . An important commercial center for southeast Florida during World War II with Naval Air Station Miramar (NAS) located just southwest of town served as a launching point for aircraft used by both United States Marine Corps forces and RAF Bomber Command operations flying strategic bombing missions over Germany and Japan during that conflict; many USS Constitution class battleships were based at NAS Miramar before their decommissioning in 1945.. The Army Corps Of Engineers constructed several dams acrossriver from town early 20th century including: Alachua Dam (1906), Clermont Dam (1910), Orange Lake Dam (1920), Indian River Lock & Dam No 2 (1925). By 1930s most industrial activity had shifted away from downtown Ft PIce due to lack of water supplies and increasing competition from inland towns such as Port Charlotte, Sarasota and Miami Beach.; however some small businesses continued until prohibition forced them out during prohibition era In 1933-'34 there was an outbreak of polio which caused significant social upheaval throughout southeastern Florida; this led to fortification efforts which increased security around schools and parks Fort Pinecrest residents organized themselves into a local trade union organization called "Citizens' Union" on 7 October 1934 when workers at Jiffy Lube garage threatened non-unionized employees with picketing outside the store if they did not sign cards pledging allegiance to Local 3331A... On 10 November 1934 citizens' union members met outside Jiffy Lube store where they disrupted service by blockading entrances; five employees were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct... Unions representing mechanics, plumbers, electricians and other labor interests formed 'IFLUNAZIO' ('Workers International Federation') on 5 December 1934... This group quickly gained support among local residents who felt their interests were being ignored by management
Fort Pierce was founded in 1821 as a trading post on the Florida Keys, and became a military depot and arsenal in the 1830s. The fort was abandoned in 1845, but was reactivated in 1861 as part of the Florida Expedition against Confederate forces. Fort Pierce played an important role during the American Civil War, being used as a supply depot and artillery base. The fort was abandoned again after the war, but it was reactivated again in 1904 as part of renovations to the battery at Fort Pierce Beach. In 1968, Fort Pierce became an annex to Miami-Dade County.
